Scarlett Johansson (born November 22 1984 New York City New York, U.S.) American actress and singer whose acting versatility earned her praise in a variety of genres from period drama to thriller and action adventure. Johansson is the daughter of a film producer as well as an architect. She was raised by New York City. Hunter Her twin brother, and she were all the smallest of a family of four. When she was just seven year old, she began casting for commercials on television. She was enrolled at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute shortly following and then went to the Professional Children's School, Manhattan to further her education. In the Off-Broadway play Sophistry she worked with Ethan Hawke. She then made her first film appearance in North (1994) and was directed by Rob Reiner, at age nine. Johansson then appeared in Just Cause, but she first made an appearance in Manny & Lo, a film about siblings left behind by their parents who escape. Then, she was awarded critical praise for portraying an teen girl who suffered an accident that resulted in her being damaged on screen in The Horse Whisperer (1998). Her popularity grew with the film Ghost World (2002) as the outcast cynical Rebecca.
